Of the Summer movie releases, "The Other Guys" starring Will Ferrell and Mark Wahlberg has been my most anticipated. The mismatched pair play New York City cops. If you’ve seen any of the previews, you get a pretty good idea that Ferrell plays a real straight-laced, nerdy, by-the-book type cop, and Wahlberg plays the gung-ho, street smart, tough guy cop. Hilarity ensues. Seriously. This movie is above average funny. It’s a little bit more than your typical Ferrell movie. There is a little more depth. Now, I realize that isn’t such a great statement in itself, but it is a start. For his part, Wahlberg is a little harder to accept in a humorous role, but he gets by. Samuel L. Jackson and Duane Johnson play short but memorable roles as over-the-top hardcore cops. And Michael Keaton (remember him?) steals most of the scenes he’s in. He plays a Captain on the force and shares the same name as former Minnesota Twins Manager Gene Mauch. Spoiler alert: New York Yankee Derek Jeter gets shot (but not killed) in this movie. If you’re a fan of Will Ferrell or of laughing, this is a must see.
The Verdict: 4 out of 5.
